The backing is the woven and coated layer beneath the fibers that gives the turf its structure and carries the drainage perforations. When urine passes through the infill, it reaches the backing. The backing is not designed to be rinsed clean — it is designed to let water drain through its perforations and out the bottom.
When drainage is working, most liquid passes through. When infill is compacted, drainage is slow, or the base holds moisture, urine residue saturates the backing material itself. A saturated backing releases odor every time it warms up — which in Houston means most afternoons. This is the layer that produces the smell that never really leaves.
