Below the backing is where drainage failure lives

Beneath the turf backing sits the drainage layer and sub-base — the graded aggregate and prepared ground that water is supposed to flow through and away from. In a well-built system, urine and rinse water pass through the backing perforations and move laterally out of the area. The base stays relatively dry and the surface drains in minutes.

When drainage fails — from compaction, base settlement, clogged drainage paths, or a base that was never graded correctly — water and urine residue collect in the base below the turf instead of leaving. That saturated base becomes a reservoir of contamination that releases odor upward through the backing and blades every time it warms.

This is the layer that makes odor feel unsolvable. Surface cleaning, enzyme treatment at the infill, and even backing treatment all sit above the problem. If the base is holding contamination, the only durable answer is to address drainage — and drainage work is a separate, separately quoted scope from cleaning and odor treatment.
