The surface is the warning layer, not the source

When pet odor shows up on artificial turf, the blades are the first place people look — and the first place they rinse. Synthetic fibers are designed to shed liquid quickly, so very little urine residue actually stays on the pile. What does collect on the surface is organic debris, biofilm, saliva, tracked soil, and dried urine salts that deposit as water evaporates.

Surface residue matters for two reasons. First, it is the visible and smellable evidence of what is building up below — a strong surface smell near a favorite spot usually means the infill and backing underneath are doing the real storage. Second, surface biofilm and organic buildup feed bacteria that continue producing odor compounds long after the pet has moved on.

A garden hose handles the surface layer reasonably well. The problem is that surface rinsing is also where most pet owners stop — and the layers that actually hold the odor are underneath, untouched by anything a hose can do.
